In 1974, Department of Computing was among the first in Hong Kong to teach Computing in the territory. We nurtured nearly 6,000 undergraduate students, 5,550 postgraduate students and 380 PhD or MPhil students for almost 50 years. We understand the importance of complementary roles between research excellence and the study experience. We not only provide the necessary conditions for excellent academic culture, quality education, extensive networks and resources, but also spare no effort to reinforce the independent capacity of our students, foster peer learning and create opportunities for aspiring younger generations to shine and pursue their dreams.
We treasure cross-disciplinary development, holistic education and academia-industry cooperation. Many graduates of our department have built their careers in world-famous companies such as Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Yahoo!, Tencent, Alibaba and DJI etc. Some graduates continue research or hold academic positions in universities worldwide.
The department ranks among the top 100 in computer science on the major world university rankings. We rank 34th in the USNEWS Ranking in 2023, 44th in Global Ranking of Academic Subjects by Shanghai Ranking in 2022, and 79th in THE Ranking in 2023.
The Department will usher in our Golden Jubilee in November next year. Various activities will be held to celebrate the Golden Jubilee. We will witness this historic moment with colleagues, students and friends who have accompanied and supported the development of the Department over the years.
Starting from the 2023/24 academic year, we will launch the first MSc in Metaverse Technology in the Greater China region to provide formal and systematic education for students who aspire to devote themselves to this field, and help them go further and leap forward steadily in this industry.
